Kia ora koutou to all members and supporters. Thank you to all those who responded to our recent request for feedback on the top five things that members believe would have the biggest impact on health and safety in workplaces, in Aotearoa. Unsurprisingly the issue that had the largest response was improving regulatory engagement. ...
In our busy fast-paced, ever-changing environments, it can be challenging to look outside of our current workspace and maintain an awareness of research, trends and initiatives that are happening offshore. However, if we do not protect time to do so, we remain reactive, not proactive. Monitoring trends is important so that we can anticipate the future impact on our capacity, capability, labour markets, and supply chains. Maintaining sight of the curve can protect our workforce and ensure we are responding in a timely and considered manner, rather than playing catch up at the end. One international trend that we might look to is the development and adoption of CLOCS – Construction Logistics and Community Safety. ...

And just like that, it's March! One of the exciting events this month is always International Women’s Day on 8 March. One might ask why, in 2023, we still observe International Women’s Day (IWD). It is a global celebration of the political, cultural, economic, and social achievements of women that also highlights the work that remains to achieve genuine equality. IWD invites us to reflect on gendered or diversity, equality, and inclusivity (DEI) issues and consideration within our own organisations, as well as those organisations that we support and across the industry. ...

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the HASANZ conference in Wellington. It was a few years in the making and it was a fantastic event. There were so many excellent presentations over the two days I am confident that everyone in attendance went away with some gems to think about, particularly in terms of how to embed what they learnt into their individual ‘business as usual’ and how to support their organisations to grow... ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. Consultation on proposed changes to ACC’s Accredited Employers Programme (AEP) is open and there are only a few days left to make a submission (due 6 November 2022). The current AEP regime is over 20 years old now and has been overdue for a refresh for a while now. ...

Kia ora koutou members and supporters. Members will recall that we have highlighted an ongoing investigation by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) into whether or not external health and safety auditors and investigators need to be licensed under their legislation. A detailed legal submission was made on behalf of HASANZ whilst NZISM also made its own, presented in person by Robyn Bennett. Karl Berendt and I joined online whilst Jodi Wright from NZSC also attended. ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters. Last week I attended the Canterbury CPD Conference, Sharing Solutions for a Stronger Future, which was held in conjunction with NZOHNA. It was wonderful to see so many health and safety practitioners and professionals gathered to engage in face-to-face networking and professional development. I’d like to extend my gratitude to all those involved in delivering this conference. It’s a massive undertaking with many hours of work contributed by local volunteers, the national office, and our generous speakers and sponsors. I enjoyed hearing from a variety of experts, who came together to share their knowledge and experience for the benefit of all who attended. ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. Last week I participated in the hearing in relation to the implications of the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010 (PSPPI Act) on health and safety investigators and auditors. ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. This week officially marks five years since I joined this wonderful organisation and I couldn’t be prouder of the progress we have made. When I stepped into the role, I had no experience working in health and safety. There was such a huge learning curve to conquer. I was very aware of my limited ability to speak on behalf of the profession. Thankfully I had Greg Dearsly as President by my side, who fulfilled the role of member representative and H&S expert for NZISM. ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. A book review: I’m always on the lookout for a good read, and this week I took the time to settle down with a copy of the International Standard ISO 37000 Governance of Organisations – Guidance (2021). I’ll be honest, it’s not the type of book that’s going to keep you up to 2am just to get to the last chapter, and it did take a couple of goes. However, as far as standards go, it’s one that makes you think about how organisations’ are governed, and how we could be better and potentially more strategic in our approach. ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters. One of my biggest takeaways from the Masterclass series with Dr John Green so far has been the reframing of the value add of the H&S professional/practitioner. He determined the role of the safety practitioner is to build resilience in organisations, to act as a catalyst and drive change. While there have been many attempts to define the profession, and the value we offer, this has most succinctly and clearly articulated that value proposition to me. ...
Hi all members of INSHPO, We are now half-way through 2 ...
Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. We are now seeing further implications of the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010 (PSPPI Act) on health and safety investigators and auditors with the release of several documents. (As a quick reminder, there were questions on whether the requirements of the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) apply to health and safety investigators and auditors.) The documents released are a legal opinion and an investigation report prepared for the Chief Investigator (CIPU) and the PSPLA, both of which can be accessed at the bottom of this update. ...
